Changing Intention in the Middle of Prayer

👤 Shaikh Ibn ul-'Uthaymeen رحمه الله

1️⃣ Scenario 1: From Nafl ➡️ Fard (Supererogatory to Obligatory)
A person makes takbeer "Allahu Akbar" and starts praying with intention of standard naafila prayer before dhuhr, for example, then whilst praying realizes he's running late and so decides to change his intention over to the obligatory prayer, 4 fard of dhuhr.
🎓 Ruling: Prayer is incorrect. It is impermissible to change from a nafl intention to fard intention in the middle of prayer. The fard prayer must be fard intention from beginning.
2️⃣ Scenario 2: From Fard ➡️ a 'Specific' Nafl
(Obligatory to a Specific Supererogatory)
A person makes takbeer "Allahu Akbar" and starts praying his 4 fard of Dhuhr prayer, but then remembers he did not pray the raatibah of Dhuhr (the specific Sunnah of Dhuhr before it) so changes his intention over to the raatibah intention.
🎓 Ruling: Prayer is incorrect. It is impermissible to change from Fard to a Specific Particular nafl like the sunnah of Dhuhr prior to it. The intention for a specific nafl must be from the beginning too.
3️⃣ Scenario 3: From Fard ➡️ General Nafl
(Obligatory to General Supererogatory)
A person makes takbeer "Allahu Akbar" with intention of Fard Dhuhr prayer, then decides to delay Dhuhr till later and so change over intention to make it a general standard nafl prayer (not specific ones linked to Dhuhr).
🎓 Ruling: Prayer is correct. His initial intention comprised of 2 parts, the intention 'to pray' and the intention specifically of 'fard Dhuhr', by changing his intention from Fard of Dhuhr to general Nafl he has nullified his specific intention for fard Dhuhr but the other half of the intention 'to just pray' remains, hence the prayer is correct as a general Nafl prayer.
